Follow up to that song I posted yesterday (“Selig”). I REALLY wanted to know the lyrics so I searched for that tonight. My Google-fu has unearthed the original lyrics in Old German, along with a… New contemporary German translation, which I then ran through Google Translate. (What the flipping hell did we ever do before Google?) L’anyhoodle, I love this song even more now...

Bizarre Victorian fact of the day...
vicfangirlguide: In the mid 19th century theatres and music halls used lamps which operated on a chemical reaction between a flame and quicklime. The light created by this reaction was used to illuminate individual actors on stage in much the same way as a modern spotlight. These ‘limes’ were the origin of the phrase ‘in the limelight’.
